As Rogers has gotten to know the black bears firsthand, he has learned that a bear’s life is ruled by fear and food. Once a bear comes out of hibernation, it must gain enough weight to survive another winter. Bears guard their territories carefully against other bears to protect their food sources.

Living Near Bears

“People continue to move into bear country,” Rogers said. “Since bears and humans share space, we must learn to understand one another.”

Rogers encourages people living near bears to keep all food and garbage where the bears can’t get to it.

“Bears won’t hang around if you don’t attract them,” Rogers said.

“If you do see a black bear, remember that they are anxious around you, so you need to respect their space,” Rogers said. “Most importantly, savor the opportunity to see an incredible animal in its natural habitat.” But do it from a distance!
